The industry of semiconductor design has undergone varied changes. Previously, semiconductor design was an area for the creatives and innovators where each chip was designed from the ground up and aimed at pushing the bounds of what was possible in the industry. However, with the introduction of foundry-provided standard IPs, today the chips are not designed but put together like standard blocks. Semiconductor design has changed from an innovative practice to mere LEGO creation.
Established in 2006, DXCorr is the pioneer in the semiconductor industry. DXCorr develops driving edge physical IP arrangements in cutting-edge process hubs for an extensive variety of SoC designs incorporating complex memory IP-SRAMs, CAMs, Multiports, memory subsystems, and standard cells. It combines the best facet of hardware design and software development, thereby expediting the chip design and silicon delivery.
DXCorr follows a rare philosophy which has proven to be one of the key reasons behind its success. “There are no ‘holy cows’ in DXCorr’s philosophy. Every idea can and must be challenged. This is made possible due to a significant lack of hierarchy. The only thing that matters is the idea. Every employee is at liberty to question existing approaches and suggest improvements. The process of thought is unrestricted,” adds Sagar Reddy, CTO, DXCorr.
The principle of self-reliance was what led to the establishment of DXCorr, and it continues to guide the firm to date. We had the opportunity to interview the CEO of DXCorr, Nirmalya Ghosh, who helped us understand the working of DXCorr and how it is striving to develop a model product portfolio that will serve as an industry benchmark for years.
What was the inspiration behind establishing DXCorr?
DXCorr was established with an inspiration to revolutionize or renew the future of technology in its way. The progression in smart devices has given rise to the increasing complexity is to critically optimize each processor core in an SoC (System-on-Chip) to meet the power, performance, area (PPA), yield, and application-specific cost goal. This is necessitated by the typical requirement from a client in the VLSI universe – the need to provide the best possible PPAL (power, performance, area, and leakage – global metrics of semiconductor design) in the shortest time frame. This is the sweet spot that all design houses try to achieve during project execution, and DXCorr overcomes this constant challenge for every project with utmost efficiency. Thanks to its battle-tested core of domain experts and its enviable suite of in-house tools, successful projects are delivered on time and with top-notch quality.
What makes DXCorr’s services innovative as compared to the other providers in the industry?
DXCorr’s flagship offers a semiconductor memory portfolio in multiple nodes, running the spectrum from SRAM, MRAM, and, lastly, TCAM. It is innovative in its way as it develops high-performance and high-density SRAMs and MRAMs. DXCorr works on the latest low-power process nodes such as 7nm & 14nm finFET, 22nm & 12 nm FDSOI, and 28nm & 40nm. DXCorr elegantly resolves the conflict in concurrent read & concurrent write operations in two-port SRAMs. Power-efficient, high-speed binary and ternary CAMs make its clients stand out in a market that craves faster networks and more efficient processors. The extensive understanding of custom design allows DXCorr to significantly improve the performance of various custom logic and arithmetic functional blocks in multiple process nodes.
What were the challenges that you overcame to become one of the innovative companies in the industry?
Implementing an innovation program can require sweeping internal changes, meaning that some employee roles will change for the better, and others will change for the worse. Risk and innovation go hand-in-hand. As the cliche goes, you need to be flexible to take a decision and lead the team accordingly. We faced these initial challenges which we overcame throughout the years and fine-tuned each passing day.
How will you describe the team at DXCorr?
DXCorr has a diverse team of different domains which have dedicated Analog, mixed-signal, Memory, digital circuit, layout, RTL, and P & R folks. All the teams are versatile in their own way in terms of technical & project handling capabilities with the best project lead.
Do you undertake any initiatives or promote training programs for the team members?
DXCorr provides employees with continuous training and development opportunities to hone their skills for maximum efficiency. Our employees turn challenges into opportunities every day through their inventiveness, tenacity, and passion. Together, we are a team. We break new ground. Employees are encouraged to explore sub-domains other than their own to develop a holistic understanding of VLSI. The exposure to the fact helps in cross-domain training. It also allows them to fine-tune their core domain basics and develop much deeper overall knowledge beyond boundaries. This approach naturally leads to their involvement in the latest technologies and industry trends.
According to you, what are the qualities that an innovative company must have?
As I feel, Innovation is nothing more than a tool that enables companies to achieve unique, strategic goals. A modern smaller participant won’t be regarded globally, however its leaders, employees, business partners, and clients all should have a clear concept of the organization`s method & strategies. Therefore, highly innovative companies do not see innovation as an end, but rather as a means to achieving strategic goals. Most importantly, if you hire capable, creative people and give them the freedom to solve problems, they will do so. And, in so doing, they will help innovation to thrive throughout the company. Nurturing & cultivating the ideas of the team helps to achieve the common vision altogether.
As an innovative company, what are the ground-breaking changes that you expect to see in the industry?
Breakthrough innovation fundamentally changes the dynamics of a given industry or market. Based on our experience, most of the time breakthrough innovation isn’t simply one innovation. Sure, it typically supported an even bigger radical or turbulent innovation however should nearly always be combined with a variety of smaller, progressive, and sustaining innovations to measure up to its full potential to reshape entire markets and industries. DXCorr is constantly attempting to infuse its in-house tool development with the most practical aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These are 2 upcoming domains where the handshaking of hardware-software interplay has the potential to dramatically alter humanity’s course for the betterment.
