Okpara’s journey with Ebuxe started while he studied and went on to work with local and multinational organizations. His inspiration stems from the need for a larger change and the need for making advanced technologies accessible. More than grit and perseverance, what stands out is his firmly grounded nature and his commitment to stay put. As he says, “The path of change must lead to love – that is to doing good.”
Under his leadership, Ebuxe has been recognized in 2020 by ACQ5 (Acquisition Finance Magazine) Global Awards as Company (Biotechnology) Of The Year in Africa and himself as Game-changer Of The Year by ACQ5 and by Global Health & Pharma (GHP) as The Most Innovative Biotechnology Company – West Africa and the Best Community Healthcare Start-up — Nigeria at GHP Biotechnology Awards 2020. “Leadership, they say, is not about positional placement but about influence on any system and beyond. I believe leadership is much more than that. It’s of course influence but even more so effect: its nature, quality and results (that is fruits).”
His efforts are not just directed to bring change on one level. His efforts are indicative of a collective change that should be seen in the global society when leadership efforts come to fruition. “To change the world, one must change oneself, as they say. But leadership should be about driving change to beneficial effects. The effect, that is to say in this scenario the fruits of entrepreneurship must therefore go beyond just setting up a business and properly understood should be measured by its socio cultural and economic impact.” He adds, “That’s the way I view leadership–and by extension business. It informs my strategy and decisions all the time.”
According to Okpara, human beings are the most effective leadership and business resource. Therefore, mastering human relations must be a top priority for any leader. Cooperation has played a key role in Ebuxe’s growth. From his clientele, to vendors and employees, Okpara’s fundamental cornerstone is reputation. “Reputation differs from popularity. The critical defects in the global biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry are reputation and functional values.”
When it comes down to forging partnerships, he feels the best way to do so is via face-to-face meetings. “In business you need partners, service providers and allies and it’s imperative that these support systems share your corporate goals and are aligned with your overall vision and yes mission. Therefore, care must be taken in forming such critical business relationships to ensure safe and efficient conduct of business. A face to face in sealing such critical deals is necessary to help a business executive understand, manage and deal with all aspects of any potential relationships including the institutional, psychological and character predispositions of key personnel and partners in any business relationships and partnerships.”
Quality business relationships require a certain character including trust and effectiveness. Okpara has spent years crafting a super-strong, super-efficient and super-profitable system that functions like a well-oiled machine. “Our reputation and functional values are super-strong and super-sustainable. Functional values are the lived values of a company as opposed to written ones. You see that, for example, with my former employer Novartis and their serial criminal indictments and settlements. Their pattern of very debased unethical, unprofessional, scandalous and criminal conducts — and unlawful, immoral way of doing business — is very common within the industry globally.”
He adds, “I set out to build this company with my eyes open and my decision making was always going to align with and satisfy my deepest intentions for the business. Come what may, we have prevailed despite the super-underdeveloped and super-degenerate environment that is Nigeria. We are taking our super-resiliency and super-strong mentality partly developed in this tough context globally.”
When asked about what motivates him to keep working towards his goals, Okpara says, “Go with God. Never give up.” While his words may look simple, the meaning is profound. “In life and business there are incontrovertibly complex moments where decision making is beyond superficial analysis and the details of any situation can swing matters one way or the other with serious ramifications. In such situations, there is a need for a prayerful and intelligent approach to life, including super-resiliency. God and willpower with help one through such situations.”
His advice to the upcoming and budding entrepreneurs is straightforward: Be not afraid and strategize super-strongly. “Initially, in business there may be a fear to begin and one can be overly burdened by the weighty responsibility of being a founder, a president, a chief executive officer or a business executive but with the passage of time and mastery over tasks one commands the ropes more easily, develops calm and delivers more efficiently on key and general priorities. Give time and gain mastery with courage.”
After cementing their sales and marketing team, Ebuxe is currently working on venturing into API manufacturing, R&D and medtech interventions around AI, cloud computing and robotics to name a few.
