With time, Positive-One has become more involved in mobile communications such as 4G, industrial equipment, automotive, and medical. Shoichi believes that it has given his company the ability to complement some or all of our global platforms.
Positive-One’s journey began in 2004. Sharing one of his first remarkable experiences at Positive-One, Shoichi remarks, “The first of these projects was a digital signage project. In 2005, a major advertising company’s core business was TV advertising and advertising on large screens in buildings and baseball stadiums. They needed a company that could design a business model, design specifications, and contract development, and provide technical support to expand their digital signage market and release a mid-level, IoT-level digital signage service.” Shoichi adds, “We conducted more research, specification design, and testing than we do now on a wide range of unknowns–IoT and servers, and systems that work with mobile.” Looking back, Shoichi’s comments, “This created an example of how technology selection and development can be done to suit a business model, rather than being driven by technology trends. We care about new technology trends, but budget and schedule considerations may not allow us to include new technology trends.”
Maintaining the keeping pace with the developing electronics sector, Shoichi is keen on exploring the market to find the right fit that meets the client’s and customer’s requirements. “New technology trends are an important part of new projects and new customer wins. New technology trends do not always translate into business. However, we have always been able to gain a better understanding of the market trends and win business with a higher angle than doing a semiconductor-related trading company.”
Evolution is a part of our existence. “Being experts in the embedded industry, we have more niche knowledge and experience than the so-called IT world. And we are constantly evolving as we investigate and learn new technologies. That’s what differentiates us from other companies.”
Positive-One has evolved as a consultancy to become a partner in development for ODM/EMS products. Moving on, they wish to function as a plug-in for the new technological ecosystems, paving the way for their client’s success irrespective of their footprint.
Since its inception, Positive-One has created a culture of innovation, curiosity, and continued learning. Positive-One is aiming for alliances and joint ventures in the IoT field that are lacking in investors and startups.
With the launch of 5G and 6G, things are about to change drastically for everyone. However, the role of hardware and firmware cannot be ignored. “IoT, 5G, etc., are important for how embedded technologies are used. We think about the entire system and being well versed in embedded technology is always necessary.”
In June 2020, Positive-One received a formal notice for their patent application that can reduce the power consumption in 5G and 6G mobile technologies. The architecture of the technology readjusts the load across servers to optimize power usage effectively. “Our goal is to become a departmental team that can take full advantage of the capabilities of IoT and 5G development through business partnerships and development with companies that provide cloud and IoT services so we can develop our business together.”
Shoichi Kudo worked for the first UNIX machine company in Japan that was linked to the evolution of silicon (related to hardware) in the early days of Silicon Valley. In the 1990s, there was a dash of development and manufacturing of microcomputers and processors made in Japan by the major Japanese electronics manufacturers. Until then, Japan had been using Motorola (68k micro-controllers) and Intel. It’s hardware and software hands-on experience included working on board development and software development on Hitachi’s SH1-SH4 boards. In addition, he worked on the development of data communications for NTT’s R&D when it was initially one of the top 10 companies in the world in terms of assets and revenue, and has worked on deep technologies, including silicon (related to hardware) and telecommunications (e.g. ATM, Router, PBX, Transmission equipment, base-station). He used these experiences to move on to work with WindRiver, QNX and ENEA, where he successfully completed many projects in the Asia-Pacific region. He is a CEO of engineering caliber by being involved in legacy and deep technologies and innovative technologies in Silicon Valley.
