Will GM and Honda’s collaboration surpass Tesla’s EVs?

General Motors and Honda Motor Co have partnered to develop a series of lower-priced electric vehicles based on a new joint platform, producing potentially millions of cars from 2027 in a bid to surpass Tesla in sales.

General Motors has announced that it will begin building two EV SUVs for Honda in 2024. The SUVs are named Honda Prologue and Acura models.

Affordable EVs by GM and Honda

The deal between the automakers is aiming to manufacture an ‘affordable EV’ which will include compact crossover vehicles built using GM’s Ultrium battery technology. The crossover between the automaker companies has resulted in the biggest-selling auto sector in the world. The companies account for manufacturing annual volumes of more than 13 million vehicles.

Mary Barra, the Chief Executive of GM stated in an event that the pricing will come below the $30,000 price tag planned for the electric Chevrolet Equinox SUV. These models will be cost-effective and among the attainable EVs for the population.

GM surpass Tesla

Mary Barra also confirmed that GM is aiming to surpass Tesla in EV sales. She adds, “We have a very important goal…that by mid-decade, by 2025, we’ll sell more EVs in the U.S. than anyone else and to do that, you need to have a portfolio of vehicles. We definitely can scale and can do it quickly.”

GM and Honda will also work on future battery technology collaborations for EVs that are lower cost. The deal is aimed at pushing forward to achieve the carbon-neutrality in global products and operations by 2040. Furthermore, by 2035 the company aims to eliminate tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles in the U.S.

Honda is also on a mission to reach carbon neutrality on a global basis by 2050. The CEO of Honda, Toshihiro Mibe commented, “Honda and GM will build on our successful technology collaboration to help achieve a dramatic expansion in the sales of electric vehicles.
