Fantastic Beasts 3 fails to meet the hype of ‘Harry Potter’ series

The third chapter of ‘Harry Potter’ spinoff series ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ was released recently. However, the spinoff has failed to meet the fan-favorite Harry Potter series. By far, the ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ has collected $43 million in its domestic box office debut.

The weekend box office charts are hinting that J.K. Rowling’s ever-expanding Wizard world is losing its hold on the fans. By far, ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ has reported the worst start for a ‘Harry Potter’ adjacent movie.

The Fantastic Beast 1 released in 2016 launched to $74 million in North America. The follow-up movie Fantastic Beast 2 was released for $62 million.

‘Harry Potter’ fandom not impressed by Fantastic Beasts

The declining fandom towards ‘Fantastic Beasts’ is challenging as the production value for these movies is not cheap. ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ was made on a budget of $200 million and additionally, millions were spent on the promotions across the world.

To date, the movie has grossed $193 million globally. However, the pandemic in China has affected the sale of tickets. Around 50% of the movie theatres have been closed. Alongside, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has lost access to Hollywood films. Since the pandemic, only 5 Hollywood movies have grossed $500 million at the global box office.

Other releases this week

Apart from ‘Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ there were other movie releases too at the box office. Some of these projects have failed miserably.

  • Sony’s ‘Father Stu’ earned only $5 million from 2,705 North American theatres. The movie has fallen to 5th place and has been declared flopped.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the Paramount has grossed around $30 million from 4,258 movie theatres. But the sales declined by 58% in the second weekend.
  • Paramount’s other release ‘The Lost City’ grossed $6.5 million in the 4th week grossing a collective of $78.5 million.
  • ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ by the A24 has grossed $6.1 million and earned $17.6 million by far.
