Mercedes-Benz Group has confirmed that it has opened a research and development center in Shanghai that will focus on mobility technology. This center is the second R&D facility for Mercedes Benz in China and it will work in tech fields like connectivity, automated driving, and big data.
There were no official comments on the size of investment in the new tech center or how many engineers it plans to hire eventually for the new location.
Mercedes-Benz released a statement that it will be aiming to attract hundreds of new tech talents.
R&D centre at Shanghai
The new R&D center in Shanghai follows the decision of Mercedes significantly upgrade its R&D facility in Beijing last year.
The new Beijing tech facility has 1,000 engineers and is estimated to be more than three times the size of the one Mercedes-Benz opened in 2014, and also it is the first outside-Germany facility that is on-par technically with the firm’s far bigger R&D Headquarters near Stuttgart.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the top contenders in the race of automotive electric cars. The carmaker recently revealed the all-new EQS SUV which is eliminating the monotony in automation. The newly introduced electric SUVs feature a massive 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen combined with a 12.3-inch OLED display.
The new feature comes with a condition. If the driver wants to use the feature to its full potential, the passengers will have to wear headphones to prevent any distractions to the driver. Furthermore, the driver’s eyesight will also be monitored and if the driver attempts to look at the screen the passenger screen will automatically dim. EQS SUV’s entertainment system will be supported by the Dolby Atmos sound system.
