Recently, some reports indicated Microsoft and the future of its foldable phone, the Surface Duo. Although foldable phones are not a new concept, we have seen Samsung and LG which had already offered foldable phones to the customers. Microsoft’s new patent application indicates towards unique foldable display without creating an angled gap. Also, the application includes reverse-fold 360-degrees for a single-display mode.
With the new patent, Microsoft will be able to solve many issues with Surface Duo which heavily depends on two displays instead of one. The gap created by the two displays is sometimes frustrating for the customers who want a single-screen experience while the Surface Duo can reverse fold into many different angles including a single screen mode.
With Google’s Android 12L, the surface Duo will be able to provide smooth multitasking similar to any advanced smartphone. Android 12L will further help to mimic the dual-screen experience without OEMs. The patent application includes a range of folding devices and methods of folding. New Display Technology
Last week, Gizmo China reported, LG’s new display technology at SID 2022 Display Week. The 8.03-inch foldable OLED display can fold inwards and outwards at any angle from 0 to 360 degrees. UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) is used in the LG’s display and anti-fingerprint material which makes the device look clean. The resolution is 2480 x 2200 with 413 PPI, offers 430 nits of brightness (but peaks at 600), and delivers 109.9% DCI-P3 color gamut.
Microsoft is not planning to release a Surface Duo 3. However, it is planning to focus on software including delivering Android 12L in the coming months for Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2.
