UrbanVolt: Approaching Restorative Economy Differently

Albert Einstein once said, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” Sustainability, climate change and waste management have remained the biggest topics that have caught headlines. UrbanVolt is a one of a kind Light as a Service company that focuses on making energy efficiency profitable for business.

UrbanVolt, a Dublin based certified B corporation, is helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint with their revolutionary offerings. Led by a startup veteran, Kevin Maughan, the company has saved over 62.5 million kWh of electricity in 2019 alone. With offices in Ireland, the US and Germany, and operations spanning across three continents, the company is on its way to break more records.

Why was the company set up? How did you select the vertical and decide to be a part of the global platform?

Everyone understands the benefits of becoming more energy efficient — cash savings, reduced carbon footprint, employee retention… It’s not a hard sell. But time and money always stand in the way.
UrbanVolt was established to break down these barriers, and to make it possible for companies to obtain the benefits of an LED upgrade — minus the hassle, minus the risk. We wanted to make it possible for companies to achieve sustainability — quickly, at scale, and at no upfront cost.

How successful was your first project roll on? Share the experience.

Our first project was a fashion clothing warehouse. The data told us the client would see 80 percent energy savings when they transitioned to LED lighting, with a corresponding drop in their energy spend. As predicted, these savings more than covered the UrbanVolt service fee.

What we were not expecting, however, was the feedback from staff and management at the site. Staff spoke of being able to complete more picks per shift because the quality of light was so much better. They also reported that they were happier at work due to the improved working environment, and because they felt the company had invested in improving the building they worked in. The feedback we receive once the installation is complete is overwhelmingly focused on the soft benefits.

How has the company evolved over the years?

When UrbanVolt was first incorporated, it was a bit of a ‘Jack of all trades.’ We wanted to help as many businesses as we could to reduce their energy consumption, regardless of size or industry. We transformed shops, car parks, grocery stores, pharmaceutical plants and more across Ireland and the UK by installing energy efficient LED lighting via our zero capex Light as a Service model.

Since then, we have fine-tuned our focus to where we can have the biggest impact: the warehousing, logistics and manufacturing industries. We operate on a global scale, with clients across three continents.

What is your company’s mission? And to what extent are you successful in achieving the same?

As a Certified B corporation, we believe in using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. UrbanVolt’s mission is to radically reduce the global carbon footprint.

We understand that for sustainability to really gain momentum in large companies it has to be profitable. By making sustainability financially attractive we are encouraging wider adoption of energy efficient technologies, and reducing carbon emissions. Our clients saved over 62.5 Mn kWh of electricity in 2019 alone, and 2020 is set to top that.

What challenges did you face in your initial years? What can your peers learn from it?

Inertia… In our early years, clients didn’t recognize the severity of the climate crisis. As the lights they had were typically still working, they felt under little pressure to make a decision. There was no sense of urgency to become more energy efficient.

With growing pressure from investors, staff and customers in recent years, the number of companies dedicated to achieving true sustainability has increased.

Two-way communication is the key. Employees need to feel they have an outlet for sharing their observations and ideas, is this true with your company?

Although we operate globally, the UrbanVolt team is small. Our data-driven approach has enabled us to keep employee numbers low. Every team member has an opportunity to work directly with senior management and have a tangible impact on the business.

Regardless of the hierarchy, ideas and suggestions are taken into consideration in UrbanVolt. New perspectives are always welcome, as we strive for continuous improvement to the service we provide.

The focus on purpose. How well do your employees know their role in contributing to the team’s and company’s success?

Our UrbanVolters differentiate us from the rest. The success of each and every UrbanVolt project is entirely dependent on the input of our varying departments – marketing, customer success, finance and operations. Since each member is involved in the customer journey, a seamlessly executed project is a shared victory.

What do you feel are the reasons behind your consistent growth as an organization?

Our consistent growth is a testament to our dedication to continuous improvement. We never settle for good. We strive for excellence in everything we do.

Customer service is [as it should be in any business] a pivotal element of what we do. Regardless of the department, each and every UrbanVolter is focused on delivering excellent customer experience in every interaction.

What drove you towards the idea of sustainable lighting?

Consumers are dramatically changing their behaviors in an effort to reduce their personal environmental impact, spurred to action by an ever-increasing media focus on climate action, but yet emissions continue to rise. Consumers simply do not have the scale to impact global carbon emissions in time to save our planet from irreparable damage. Large corporations need to take action.

The consumer LED lighting revolution had already proven that there were 80% energy reductions available when you made the switch, but businesses had yet to embrace LED lights.

We knew if we could make it easy and attractive for large businesses to upgrade to LED lighting, we could make a significant impact in the fight against climate change.

What other sustainable products are you looking at?

Motivated by interest from our client base, we have transformed our initial offering of Light as a Service to the all-encompassing Sustainability as a Service. We now serve as a full solution sustainability partner to our clients – first to radically reduce their energy consumption via the fully funded and managed implementation of energy efficient technology, and then to install renewable technology.

Our Solar-as-a-Service (SOLAAS) products are now being rolled out to our existing clients. Driving efficiency and reducing energy consumption must be the first step, only then will companies get the best from solar.

Sustainability enthusiasts round the world are regarding the pandemic as a wake up call. Would you agree? Why or why not?

The pandemic has been a wake up call for many, exposing systemic failures in both business and society. The couple of months of lockdown in countries across the globe have proven beyond doubt the damage humans are inflicting on the planet we call home. Companies that have survived the turbulent past few months will undoubtedly face another uphill battle if they fail to take action on an issue that is so close to the hearts of consumers.
