- Five high school students are chosen to serve as National Student Poets, an honor presented by the National Student Poets Program.

Five high school students have received a prize to encourage them to share their passion for poetry in their communities and beyond while receiving a $5,000 cash award.
The Poets program presented an honor to the students from New York City to Sante Fe, New Mexico, by naming them National Student Poets. They will serve as poetry ambassadors for 1-year terms giving talks and presiding over workshops and other programs.
Names Of The 5 High School Students
The poets are 10th and 11th graders chosen from five regions out of 22,000 applicants across the United States. They are:
- Emily Igwike from Midwest from the University School of Milwaukee
- Jessie Begay from Southwest from the New Mexico School for the Arts in Santa Fe
- Vidhatrie Keetha from Northeast from the Horace Mann School in New York City
- Winslow Hastie, Jr. from Southeast from the Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston, South Carolina
- Diane Sun from West from Interlake High School in Bellevue, Washington
The Institute of Museum and Library Services Director, Crosby Kemper, will formally appoint the student poets during a Sept. 27 ceremony at the Planet Word Museum in Washington, DC. Poet Naomi Shihab Nye will be the main speaker.
Kemper said that poetry is for the soul. Their five young National Student Poets show plenty of that in their passionate work. As they help lead us out of our long bout with the pandemic, they will provide balm for our distresses and delight our hearts.
What is the National Student Poets Program?
The 10-year old National Student Poets Program is a collaboration including the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. This program manages the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Awards jurors this year included poet Edward Hirsch and former US poet laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.
