IKEA buys Florida’s Hurricane destroyed lands

The biggest furniture brand, IKEA recently bought land in Florida which was destroyed in Hurricane Michael. This is a part of the long-term commitment towards forest management.

Ingka Group, 0wner has confirmed that it will plant seedlings mainly of longleaf pine on the 1,321 hectares of land. This was followed by a statement, “The new forests will support increased biodiversity, help ensure sustainable timber production from responsibly managed forests, and recover land damaged by Hurricane Michael in October 2018.

IKEA investing in Forest lands

This investment is not new for the Ingka Group. Over the years it has been investing in forest lands across countries. By far the company owns around 250,000 hectares in the U.S., Europe, and New Zealand.

The head of Ingka Group Investment arm, Krister Mattson, stated that the company’s afforestation efforts are a long-term investment that will not only consolidate their business but also positively impact the climate through the absorption of CO2 during the forest growth.

Efforts towards being Climate Positive

IKEA works through a franchise system with Ingka Group as the main retailer. The aim of IKEA is to be climate positive by 2030 and reduce the emissions of greenhouse gas. Also, put efforts into customers’ furniture disposal.

The biggest furniture brand, IKEA does not have any initiative that is currently working on reducing the CO2 emissions and is also not using wood from its own forest in production. Though the focus is on being environmentally friendly and Ingka Group, with IKEA is dedicating their efforts & resources towards afforestation and forest management.
